Deep-freeze, heating, and weathering chambers next to shear benches, combustion chambers, and microscopes: With a wide range of testing methods, modern analysis methods, and long-standing expertise, the Research + Development Laboratory is an important innovation driver at Schreiner Group. It plays an important role in the development of innovative functional labels and technological solutions.

In the Research + Development Laboratory, sophisticated testing services are performed that satisfy the exacting demands of customers from sectors such as pharma, automotive, and general industrials. The diversity of available testing equipment enables the evaluation of all relevant characteristics of materials and functional elements under realistic conditions. Especially important is the compliant determination of adhesive properties according to FINAT standards supported by state-of-the-art measuring technology in a compliant air-conditioned laboratory facility.

Realistic Conditions

Services range from mechanical scratch and abrasion resistance tests to media resistance investigations concerning liquids from pharmaceutical and automotive applications. Alternating climate tests, UV weathering, or deep-freeze conditions down to -196 °C enable realistic load simulations and create a valid basis for evaluating functional materials and thus for high-tech labels. Specific testing equipment for pressure compensation seals as well as tests for flame retardancy and technical cleanliness complement the range of available tests.

In-Depth Analysis

Analytical methods such as IR and UV/ VIS spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, or contact angle measurements enable a more in-depth characterization of materials and surfaces. Additionally, for use cases in drug protection, measuring devices are available that enable tracking of the time-dependent increase of the oxygen concentration in pharma containers. This combination of modern testing methods and analytical procedures makes it possible to systematically drive material and technology innovations and to support customers in complex questions with solid professional expertise.

In-House Prototyping

Close integration with prototyping enables fast implementation and evaluation of new ideas on a laboratory scale. In addition, small series can be fabricated. The high professional expertise of the laboratory team secures reliable results and efficient development and qualification processes—as an important contribution to Schreiner Group’s innovation leadership adding value for the benefit of our customers.

In 1951, Margarete and Theodor Schreiner founded “M. Schreiner – Spezialfabrik für geprägte Siegelmarken und Etiketten” in a garage in München-Laim—marking the beginning of a sustainable success story.

The move into a larger facility created the prerequisites for further growth. The rollout of selfadhesion technology in the same year produced the technological breakthrough.

In 1974, their son, Helmut Schreiner, took over the company that managed to double its annual sales within two years. In the mid-1970s, 36 employees celebrated the 25th anniversary.

In 1993, Schreiner with its then 160 employees relocated to the current headquarters on Bruckmannring in Oberschleissheim—a strategic move for further growth.

By opening its own production site in Blauvelt near New York Schreiner Group achieved a milestone for internationalization and proximity to the customer.

Generational change in 2012: After 38 years at the helm of the company, Helmut Schreiner handed over the role of CEO to his son, Roland Schreiner, who has been successfully leading the hightech company to this day.

By opening the production site near Shanghai Schreiner Group in 2016 took another important step in its internationalization strategy.

In 2019, Schreiner opened a second plant in the Munich metropolitan area: The site in Dorfen. After just six years the location was extended with a new building by nearly 40 percent.

Schreiner Group has significantly extended its Dorfen location with a large new building directly connected to the existing production facility. The additional 2,700 square meters of floor space create ample capacity for continued and sustainable growth. At the end of 2025, CEO Roland Schreiner, Senior Shareholder and Investor Helmut Schreiner, and Dorfen’s then First Mayor Heinz Grundner officially opened the new extension together with employees and invited guests. The new building provides an important foundation for future-oriented manufacturing operations.

Since it was opened in 2019, the Dorfen site has experienced dynamic development. Starting with a workforce of 25 employees, the site has grown to approximately 100 employees within just a few years. To meet the increasing demand for space, the extension project—covering around 2,700 square meters—was completed over the past year and a half.

The new building offers additional capacity for printing and converting processes, anewly structured rack warehouse, ink laboratories, common areas, and optimized logistics centers for incoming and outgoing goods. A key element of future production logistics is the new automated guided vehicle system, which was also presented during the opening event. The system is designed to automate and improve the efficiency of material flow between the production areas and the warehouse. Initial test runs have already been carried out successfully.

Systematic Growth

“The Dorfen site is an excellent example of systematic growth,” said CEO Roland Schreiner. “With this extension and the planned automation steps, we are deliberately investing in greater efficiency, improved process quality, and long-term future readiness. These measures not only strengthen the Dorfen plant, but the entire company.”

Senior Shareholder and Investor Helmut Schreiner added: “It gives me great pleasure to see how the Dorfen plant has developed. By extending the site, we are making a clear commitment to long-term growth and to the future of our family-owned company.”

Dorfen’s then First Mayor Heinz Grundner also acknowledged the company’s commitment during the opening ceremony: “With this investment, Schreiner Group is sending a strong signal. The combination of site expansion and innovative technologies demonstrates how attractive Dorfen is as a business location and underlines the focus on sustainability and long-term development.”

Mark Wright has assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer at Schreiner Group. The finance and real estate expert has been the innovative high-tech company’s CFO since the beginning of the year and as such been responsible for the commercial aspects of all four locations in Oberschleissheim, Dorfen, New York, and Shanghai. He succeeds Karl Tschacha who successfully held this role for 15 years and decisively shaped the commercial structures of the internationally operating family business.

Mark Wright brings more than 25 years of international management and leadership experience to the role. The graduate of business administration who earned his degree at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich and obtained further qualification as a real estate economist (IREBS) in a part-time program previously served in various commercial leadership roles at Giesecke+Devrient for 26 years. Most recently, he was responsible for leading the commercial part of the real estate business. Prior to that, he also served as CFO of the group’s Canadian branch for several years, among other things.

“Schreiner Group impressed me with its innovative prowess, its internationality, and its clear growth strategy,” says Mark Wright. “The CFO role combines classic financial responsibility with strategic subjects such as digitalization. This combination makes the job especially attractive.” Wright sees major potential for all business units especially in the field of RFID: “The market is clearly developing away from simple labels to data-based value-adding solutions. RFID, digitalization, and smart data are decisive growth drivers for our target markets.

CEO Roland Schreiner emphasizes the importance of the replacement for the further development of the company: “In Mark Wright we’re gaining a CFO with strong international experience and a strategic view. He’s going to provide important impetus to controlling the business and further growth of Schreiner Group.

By developing a smart factory Schreiner Group is achieving a milestone on the road toward a fully connected and data-driven manufacturing operation. The first pilot project in the Needle-Trap process center shows what potential a modern IT/OT architecture has and how it unleashes new opportunities for transparency, efficiency, and automation.

Schreiner Group has experienced enormous growth in recent decades. Between the middle of the 1990s and the middle of the 2020s, the number of employees has grown from less than 200 to nearly 1,300. That’s good for the company—but a challenge for developing a smart factory: due to the enormous growth, there have been different machine generations, heterogeneous control systems, and lack of standardization. Real-time data were available only to a limited extent which also caused automation approaches to reach their limits. Project Leader Daniel Paswerg describes the starting point: “We realized early on that we needed a future-proof foundation to enable true digitalization on the factory floor.”

Connectivity as the Key

For over one and a half years, IT and OT have been working together on a new architecture that now for the first time is being productively used in the Needle-Trap process center. It enables consistent connectivity across all levels of automation providing the basis for data intelligence and modern Industry 4.0 applications. The centerpiece is middleware serving as a central communications hub connecting a wide variety of machines and systems with each other in real time. This has been complemented by a revised network architecture meeting today’s requirements by IT security and compliance.

Successful Starting Point

With the successful pilot, Schreiner Group is creating a scalable foundation for further digital transformation. That enables databased decisions, improves process stability, and opens up new prospects for automations. At the same time, valuable knowhow was generated internally. For Paswerg, the interaction of the functions is decisive: “Trust-based collaboration between IT and OT was the key to success. That’s how we managed to unite speed, quality, and IT security.”

The rollout of the architecture marks the beginning of a long-term development toward a fully connected, smart factory floor. It shows how technological innovations add strategic and forward-thinking value for the whole company.

With the “DFTA Top Trainer 2025” Award the Flexographic Technical Association e.V. (DFTA) recognizes Schreiner Group’s special commitment to training young people in apprenticeships. The accolade underlines the high priority that qualified development and responsible apprenticeship training enjoy in the company.

The award was presented to Schreiner Group during the DFTA Technical Convention in Mannheim. Training Manager Michael Limmer accepted it on behalf of the company. “This accolade recognizes the commitment of our entire team. We put our heart and soul into our training activities because we know that young talents are decisive for the successful further development of Schreiner Group,” he said. An apprenticeship training concept combining modern learning methods and personal support motivated the selection for the award. The concept not only focuses on teaching technical skills but also highlights team spirit, a sense of responsibility, and sustainable actions.

In his laudatory remarks, Professor Martin Dreher, PHD, Academic Advisor to the DFTA Technology Center, emphasized that apprenticeships at Schreiner Group go far beyond technical skills. “This is where the future is being shaped—with enthusiasm, innovative prowess, and true appreciation for young people. This company proves that apprenticeship training is not just a must-do program but a matter of the heart and soul,” he stressed in front of the professional audience.

The award confirms the high-tech company’s claim to understand apprenticeship training as a long-term responsibility and to open up sustainable prospects for their future to young people. Roland Schreiner, CEO of Schreiner Group expressed that he was proud of the accolade as well: “We’re delighted about this recognition by DFTA. That we as a family business are being recognized for this validates our philosophy in a special way: investing in people means investing in the future.”

On the occasion of the Bavarian Print Award 2025, Roland Schreiner, CEO of Schreiner Group, was recognized with the Honorary Award of the Bavarian Minister President. In the festive setting of the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche (All-Saints Court Church) of the Munich Residence Palace, Dr. Florian Herrmann, Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, presented the award. The accolade honors personalities that have made significant contributions to Bavaria as a printing location.

In his laudatory remarks, Dr. Florian Herrmann emphasized that Roland Schreiner is an outstanding entrepreneurial personality uniquely combining tradition and progress. As the third-generation CEO, he shows how much Bavaria as a printing and media location is shaped by committed family businesses: “Schreiner Group stands for innovative prowess, sustainability, and a sense of responsibility—and is a lighthouse of Bavarian medium-sized businesses.

Success is Teamwork

For Roland Schreiner, the award is not only a personal honor but also reflects great merit on all employees. “I regard this award as great recognition—not only for me but for all our employees that day in day out work with enthusiasm, ingenuity, and commitment to ensure that our products stand for quality ‘made in Germany’ around the world,” said Schreiner. “The Minister President’s Honorary Award motivates us to continue to courageously invest in new technologies while remaining true to our values as a family business.”

The Bayerische EnergieEffizienz-Netzwerk-Initiative (BEEN-i) stands for effective collaboration with the aim of strengthening the energy efficiency of the Bavarian economy. During the annual convention on the occasion of the tenth anniversary in November the successes in recent years took center stage. In conjunction with that focus, Schreiner Group was recognized for its long-standing commitment and outstanding energy efficiency results.

The convention was focused on inspiration from the business community and policymakers plus practical examples from participating companies. Now encompassing 86 networks, BEEN-I has evolved into an important driver for energy efficiency and competitiveness in Bavaria. Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger emphasized, “More than 800 companies show that energy efficiency and economic success are not opposites. They prove that self-initiative, innovation, and entrepreneurial courage provide the best basis for saving resources and remaining competitive in the process.

In addition, during the event, six companies— including Schreiner Group—that are especially active in the initiative were recognized. The award was presented by Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, State Development, and Energy. As one of the first members, Schreiner Group has stood for achieving convincing energy efficiency success for ten years. Besides the company’s constant commitment specific actions such as the heat pump house were instrumental in winning this recognition. “My thanks go to all committed companies and our partners from chambers and associations that have been implementing this initiative since 2015,” said Aiwanger.

For Schreiner Group, Dr. Thomas Gulden, Head of Environmental and Occupational Safety, accepted the award. In a subsequent presentation, he covered projects and developments with which the energy efficiency of the family business has been continuously increased in recent years. The recognition underlines Schreiner Group’s contribution to the Bavarian Energy Efficiency Initiative and shows how long-term commitment and consistent actions can lead to measurable successes.

Schreiner Group has joined the UN Global Compact, the largest worldwide initiative for sustainable business management. At the same time, the high-tech company is also part of the German Global Compact Network in which organizations are engaged in exchanges with each other about responsible resource management. With that, the family business underlines its claim to actively implement and consistently keep developing the principles of the United Nations in the areas of human rights, work standards, environment, and combating corruption.

Expanding the Commitment to Responsibility

Schreiner Group has been intensively committed to sustainability and has won multiple awards for this commitment. Joining the UN Global Compact marks another important step on the journey toward even more transparency and sustainability. As a result, the company has agreed to actively incorporate the ten Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and to annually provide information on the progress in the Communication on Progress (CoP) Report including actions on reducing emissions, promoting fair working conditions, and compliance with ethical standards along the supply chain.

Together for a Sustainable Future

Membership in the German Global Compact Network enables Schreiner Group to engage in exchanges with other committed companies and institutions. That makes it possible to jointly drive sustainable actions and to make the world fit for the future.

Under the motto of “Inspired by Tradition—Built for Innovation,” Schreiner Group opened Chinese production site in the greater Shanghai area in spring of 2016. Ten years after its foundation, the site has become an integral part of the company’s international structure. With their visit on the occasion of the anniversary, CEO Roland Schreiner and Thomas Köberlein, President of the Schreiner ProTech business unit, reaffirmed the strategic importance of the site.

Focus on Employees
The anniversary focused on dialogue with employees. In his address to the workforce, Roland Schreiner paid tribute to the site’s development and the team’s commitment: “What has been achieved here over the past ten years clearly demonstrates how successfully our internationalization strategy has been implemented.”

Dialog on Site
A key element of the visit was the exchange with the local Chinese authorities and with customers. Together with representatives of the authorities, Roland Schreiner and Thomas Köberlein toured the Jinshan Industrial Park. “A relationship of trust with the local authorities is an important foundation for stability and further growth,” said the president of the business unit. The discussions with customers also highlighted the value of local presence: proximity to the market, short distances, and reliable partnerships strengthen Schreiner Group’s position in the international environment.

Dynamic Development
The site in China was founded in 2016 and has developed dynamically ever since. Today, the plant supplies both international and local customers from the automotive, general industry, and pharmaceutical sectors. Jamie Long, General Manager of Schreiner Group (Shanghai) Company Ltd., emphasizes: “Our presence in Shanghai enables us to be very close to our customers, understand their requirements in detail, and quickly translate them into suitable solutions.”

Looking Ahead
The tenth anniversary therefore marks not only a look back, but also a look ahead. The Jinshan site remains a central pillar of Schreiner Group’s international strategy—supported by strong local roots, global standards, and continuous dialog with employees, partners, and customers.
