Tailored Void-Labels for Pharmaceutical Packaging

SCHREINER MEDIPHARM

Tailored Void-Labels
for Pharmaceutical Packaging

Operation Shield III conducted between April and October 2022 by Europol, once again revealed the massive risk of illegal medicines. Authorities seized falsified medicinal products and counterfeit medicines worth over 40 million euros—in spite of the EU Falsified Medicines Directive for pharmaceutical packaging that has been in effect for several years. Tailored Pharma-Void-Labels from Schreiner MediPharm as packaging seals deliver reliable tamper evidence. Their special void effects provide clear and irreversible first-opening indication when the label is peeled off for the first time.

Aside from the EU Directive that became effective in February 2019, the global ISO 21976 standard applies. It provides guidance on how to use security features on pharmaceutical packaging and how to check for tampering. In addition, it specifies requirements for protecting the authenticity of pharmaceutical packaging.

Consequently, tamper-proofing their product packs is a must for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Closure seals with a void effect, which Schreiner MediPharm adapts specifically to the type of packaging, materials, substrate, and application following extensive tests, are reliable and effective. As a new option, diverse void effects can now also be tailored completely to meet the requirements of a particular use case:

No Transfer
Leaves no residues on packaging. The void effect is visible only in the label after first opening.

Semi Transfer
Leaves partial residues on packaging. The void effect is visible on the pack and in the label after first opening.

Full Transfer
A complete layer remains on packaging. The void effect is visible on the pack and in the label after first opening.

All void effects can feature customized designs and branding. The range of film materials offers a selection of different colors, white, and transparent. The void effects can be used not only for seals on cardboard boxes but also on glass or plastic containers. An optional tab makes the seal particularly user-friendly. By incorporating overt or covert authentication features Pharma-Void-Label solutions can additionally provide proof of authenticity.
