The Schreiner Group has reached another milestone in the USA: since autumn, the number of employees has reached triple digits. Site Manager Ken Forlenza and his team welcomed the 100^th employee, who will now work together with his colleagues, dedicatedly operating the state-of-the-art high-tech machines to produce innovative labels for the pharmaceutical and automo­tive industries.

Since 2008, the Schreiner Group has operated a site in Blauvelt, NY — a bold step for a medium-sized family business that has proven to be pioneering in hindsight. “Having a location directly on-site was crucial for long-term success in the US market. Proximity to our customers makes a significant difference,” emphasizes Managing Director Roland Schreiner. In times of increasing trade barriers and global uncertainties, the value of this decision has become even more apparent. The presence in the USA enables flexible and independent responses to market demands — to the benefit of customers and the company’s long-term stability.

Continuous Expansion

What initially began with innovative labels and smart solutions for the pharmaceutical industry has steadily evolved: Today, 100 employees work in Blauvelt, and the Schreiner ProTech business unit is also active there with growing success — particularly for customers in the mobility and general industry sectors. Production facilities, the product portfolio, and the modern high-tech machinery have been continuously expanded in recent years.

International Orientation

The Blauvelt site exemplifies the Schreiner Group’s international focus and sustainable growth strategy. With high quality, innovation, and reliability, the team in the USA has established itself as an important partner for customers in the North American market — thereby making a significant contribution to the company’s global success.

Schreiner Group continues to grow internationally – and one key pillar of this success lies in China. The Jinshan site in the Greater Shanghai area is developing steadily and making an important contribution to the company’s global strength. President and CEO Roland Schreiner is pleased with the positive progress and the strong performance of the local team.

“I am impressed by the dedication and expertise of our team in China. The development of the site shows that our international strategy is exactly right,” says Roland Schreiner. The production facilities meet the same high standards of quality, cleanliness, and high-tech equipment as those in Germany. The plant in Jinshan supplies innovative marking and pressure compensation solutions for batteries, sensors, or electronic components primarily to international automotive suppliers—and a growing number of local Chinese manufacturers. Concurrently, the site for some time has been intensively manufacturing products for the pharmaceu­tical industry as well: specialty labels—for syringes or vials for example.

The strong demand in both market segments underscores the importance of the Chinese location for Schreiner Group’s growth. The local employees possess high expertise. One of the reasons for that is an outstanding nearby talent factory. Jamie Long, General Manager of the Chinese location, enthuses about the longstanding collaboration with the Shanghai Publishing and Printing College, “Our partnership with the college is a true gain. We’ve been able to recruit many outstanding employees directly from there in recent years—superbly educated, engaged, and motivated.” The education at the prestigious college with a hands-on approach is an ideal fit for Schreiner Group’s high claim to quality. Especially in terms of printing technology and quality assurance both parties benefit from the close collaboration.

Overall, the plant in Jinshan has seen a dynamic development in recent years. Innovative technologies, modern production facilities, and a close connection to local markets make the location a central component of Schreiner Group’s global value creation—especially for customers in the Healthcare and Mobility markets.

Schreiner Group visibly and noticeably keeps investing in its second German location in Dorfen. The successful completion of the extension of the plant and rollout of the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) starts a new chapter for the production location. More space, more efficiency—and an important step toward a Lean Factory. “We’re proud of having reached our goal despite all the challenges in recent years,” said Martin Moser, Schreiner Group’s Operations Manager. “The extension was necessary to accommodate our growth—and the AGV is the next logical step in our automation strategy.”

More Room for Growth

As early as when the new factory building was purchased and opened in 2019, the future extension of the location was included in the conceptualization and planning process. Now it has been completed: The new building has been finished since fall, making clearly larger areas available for logistics functions such as the receiving department, raw materials warehouse, and shipping department. The additional space creates new prospects on the factory floor for additional high-tech machines and thus more production volume. But the true star of the new concept is silently moving through the halls: the Automated Guided Vehicle. The employees have affectionately christened their “new colleague” Toni and integrated him in the team.

Next-Level Smart Logistics

Since summer, the AGV has been in operation in a first version that’s successively becoming even smarter, for instance, due to the pending full integration with a link to the warehouse management system.

The objective is to automate material flows in real time, avoid empty runs, and to further shorten throughput times. “The rollout of the AGV clearly moves us closer toward our goal of even leaner, connected production operations,” said Moser. “It significantly enhances the efficiency of our internal logistics—and as a side effect eases the employees’ workload.”

Dorfen as Factory of the Future

With the combination of a building extension and digitalization, the Dorfen location is an example that shows what modern industrial production can look like today. Flexible scalability, high delivery performance and automated workflow create value—for customers and employees alike.

This year, Schreiner Group started operating a new high-performance printing machine in Oberschleissheim that sets new standards: a FlexoHybrid 1,200 dpi combining the advantages of digital printing with those of classic flexographic printing technology— and making it a key component for the future viability of the high-tech company.

“Schreiner Group has had a very successful track record of classic flexographic printing for many years and is now offering the basis for the forward-looking technology that combines flexographic and digital printing,” said Oberschleissheim’s Plant Manager Dejan Karan. “To secure our leading market position and to continue offering our customers maximum quality and flexibility, the time had come for a technology leap,” added Martin Moser, Schreiner Group’s Operations Manager.

Investment in the Future

The FlexoHybrid 1,200 dpi is more than just a machine upgrade—it’s the expression of a strategic further development. In close collaboration with renowned manufacturers, a system has been developed that combines utmost efficiency with maximum customizability. Economical production is possible for both small volumes and in industrial scale—with impressive printing quality, minimal material waste, and short set-up times.

Both Standardized and Flexible

Another advantage: The new hybrid technology is based on a standardized machine concept that can be used at other locations as needed. That ensures flexibility in manufacturing—provides customers with the certainty of being able to rely on their products being manufactured at the same level of quality at any site. Consequently, the FlexoHybrid 1.200 dpi not only stands for technological excellence but also for strategic foresight: it makes manufacturing more agile, digital, and sustainable—and will continue to secure Schreiner Group’s position as a technological pioneer going forward.

When it comes to secure handling of information it is THE information security label: Schreiner Group, Oberschleissheim site, successfully passed the TISAX^® Assessment (Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange) (“Result Available”) at the beginning of December. That is an important step especially for the Schreiner ProTech business unit because it means that the company satisfies the exacting international information security requirements of the automotive industry while strengthening its position as a reliable partner for OEMs and suppliers. Of course, customers from all other sectors such as Healthcare, General Industry, and Government Security benefit from these high standards as well.

The thorough preparation that took several months paid off: “With this certification, we raised the subject of information security in our company to a new level,” said Schreiner Group’s CEO Roland Schreiner. “We critically reviewed all processes along the value chain and took comprehensive actions. The integration of an Information Security Management System (ISMS) into our existing management system and the creation of the role of a Chief Information Security Officer who has continuously been driving this effort since this year were no doubt two key elements in that regard.”

Schreiner Group has a new Operations Manager: Martin Moser assumed responsibility for operations in all four plants in Oberschleissheim, Dorfen, New York, and Shanghai a few months ago. Drawing on extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and automotive industries, he is perfectly prepared for this demanding position. His predecessor, Lorenz Geiger, is switching to the role of Senior Management Consultant Operations Group focused on strategic operations topics in the future.

“Schreiner Group is an internationally positioned high-tech company with innovative products and outstanding prospects for the future. That convinced me,” said Martin Moser. He was particularly attracted by the company’s internationalization and opportunities for further operations development. Focused on digitalization and automation, he is planning to raise Schreiner Group’s operations to the next level, emphasizing the use of artificial intelligence and innovative tools to enhance efficiency on the factory floor and continuing to optimize product quality. “Through intelligent analysis of data and statistics we can detect complex issues early on and achieve sustainable improvements,” Moser emphasized. Although the world of labels is new territory for him Moser brings long-standing expertise in Schreiner Group’s core industries to the table. In his professional career he worked in both the pharmaceutical and the automotive industry for many years.

Occupational safety plays an important role at Schreiner Group worldwide—and the Blauvelt facility is a prime example of this. For over a year, there has not been a single reportable workplace accident (Lost Time Accident—LTA) there. This remarkable achievement for a high-tech manufacturing company is not only a reason to celebrate but also proof of the consistent implementation of safety measures.

“We have successfully integrated safety into everyday work life. This is only possible because every employee takes responsibility and truly embodies safety,” emphasizes Ken Forlenza, US Site Manager. Established measures include the proactive reporting of near misses, comprehensive training, risk assessments of new processes, and safety inspections.

A Safety Culture That Connects

The employees in Blauvelt have not just seen safety as a regulation but have truly internalized it. Employees share best practices, propose improvements, and are rewarded for safe behavior. Particularly important is the principle of “doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”

Sustainability and Safety Go Hand in Hand

In addition to employee safety, sustainability plays a central role. Similar to the German locations, Schreiner Group in the USA will offer the possibility of charging electric vehicles at a corresponding station—another step towards actively promoting the topic of sustainability. This has already been established for several years at the German sites. “Sustainability is a key part of our corporate culture. With the charging station, we aim not only to improve our environmental footprint but to provide added value for our employees,” explains Forlenza.
The local team is also planning community service events and launching an exciting wellness initiative focused on proper nutrition and exercise. A healthy body and a healthy mind.

The Jinshan site is nearly three times larger than the previous facility. How has the additional space been utilized, and what are the plans moving forward?

The relocation has allowed us to install new machines for both Schreiner ProTech and Schreiner MediPharm, accommodating their growing demands. With MediPharm’s business rapidly developing in China, it’s likely the reserved space will be dedicated to expanding this division, ensuring we stay ahead in serving the pharmaceutical market. Additionally, sustainability is a key focus. We currently source 25 percent of our energy from solar power and actively encourage employees to drive electric cars— 20 percent of our team have already adopted this practice.

The Chinese market is known for its competitiveness. What challenges do you face, and how are you addressing them?

Market fluctuation is a constant challenge, particularly in the solar and automotive industries. To adapt, we’ve implemented dynamic marketing strategies and successfully launched local material sourcing projects to remain cost-competitive. Additionally, fierce competition—both local and international—drives us to leverage the strong technical and innovative support from our headquarters, ensuring we maintain a robust foundation to meet these challenges.

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for growth in China?

Schreiner Group has strong growth potential in established sectors like automotive and pharmaceuticals. However, emerging industries such as e-mobility, autonomous driving, and AI-driven solutions present exciting new opportunities. We are also focusing on local partnerships and production capabilities, particularly for MediPharm, to strengthen our market presence and meet the unique demands of this dynamic region.

Employee retention at Jinshan is exceptionally high. What makes Schreiner Group such an attractive employer in China?

Jamie Long: Employee retention is indeed a point of pride for us. While turnover is typically high in China, our strong corporate values set us apart. As a family-owned company, Schreiner Group prioritizes taking care of its employees like family. For instance, our new Jinshan site provides not only a larger facility but also a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment that fosters long-term commitment. This sense of security and belonging, paired with our dedication to sustainability, motivates our team to grow with us.

Work on the extension of our Dorfen plant is progressing: A lot has happened since the ground was broken about a year ago. Finished structural work has taken the place of previous plans. Hence Schreiner Group is consistently implementing its growth strategy at the location, creating the basis for state-of-the-art production and logistics processes.

Structural Work Is Completed, Interior Construction in Progress

“We’ve achieved decisive milestones in recent months,” reported Erich Pably, the Plant Manager in Dorfen. “The structural work is finished, the final layout has been coordinated, and interior construction work is in full swing.” Now, floorings and electrical systems are being installed and air conditioning technology is being integrated. The new part of the building is starting to take its final shape step by step. “We’re currently implementing a driverless transport system (DTS) to automate material transportation in the existing building,” Pably said.

Next Steps: Completion and Move-In

The schedule for the coming months has been finalized: The construction work is planned to be finished by September 2025. The official handover in November will be followed by the first functions moving in. Initially, the non-production functions will be relocated to the new building: logistics with the receiving department, the raw materials warehouse, and the shipping department are going to move in as well as the ink store including the mixing department and the quality management office. “In addition, the DTS will be connected with the enterprise resource planning system, as a result of which we’re going to achieve major efficiency enhancements also in terms of our logistics processes,” explained Plant Manager Erich Pably.

More Space for Innovative Production

The extension significantly enlarges the production footprint in Dorfen. Two ultramodern printing machines will be put into operation there in the coming years: a hybrid printing machine combining flexographic and digital printing and a screen-printing machine to be relocated from the headquarters location to Dorfen. To complement them, state-of-the-art finishing machines are planned that will further enhance the efficiency and quality of the production operations. “With the extension, we’re not only creating more space but also optimal conditions for our further growth,” Erich Pably emphasized. “The extension is an important step to enlarge our capacities and to optimally position the Dorfen location for the future.”

Concrete actions, ambitious goals, and a strong focus on values: Schreiner Group has firmly anchored sustainability and social responsibility in its corporate strategy for years. In the past, the company managed to achieve important milestones—and has specific plans for a climate-neutral future.

In 2024 Schreiner Group opened its own heat pump house. Consequently, the company has completely eliminated the need for gas at its headquarters location, which has massively reduced CO₂ emissions. Yet that’s not enough for the company. Most recently, in spring of 2025, Schreiner Group put down a significant marker by submitting its climate protection goals with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Specifically, CO₂ emissions according to Scope 1 and 2 compared to the base year of 2022 are intended to drop by 80 percent by 2030. The company plans to achieve full climate neutrality by 2045. These goals have already been checked and approved by SBTi.

Accompanied by annual reports about the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), progress is continuously documented. Since 2012 Schreiner Group has managed to reduce CO₂ emissions according to Scope 1 and 2 by as much as 80 percent. In addition, Scope 3 emissions went down by more than 10 percent in 2023. A trend that successfully continued in 2024—and a result that clearly surpasses the average achieved by other companies. Moreover, Schreiner Group applied for the UN Global Compact in the first half of 2025. This largest global initiative for sustainable business management supports companies in implementing their sustainability goals. “By joining the UN Global Compact, we externally express our commitment to combining economic success with social responsibility,” said Dr. Thomas Gulden, Schreiner Group’s Sustainability Officer.

External evaluation services providers have acknowledged Schreiner Group’s sustainability performances: once again, the company was awarded an above-average assessment by EcoVadis, an A rating by NQC Supplier Assurance, and a B rating by CDP. “These results validate our strategy,” said Dr. Thomas Gulden. “They show that we not only set ambitious goals but also implement them. It motivates our entire team to consistently continue our journey.”

Schreiner Group has firmly integrated sustainable innovations in its processes. They include investments in renewable energies, optimized production processes, and more sustainable supplier management. “We’re working on reducing not only our direct emissions but also on acting in climate-friendly ways along the entire value chain,” Dr. Gulden added. “That calls for a great deal of commitment but the successes validate us.”
