Successfully Protected: Robust RFID-Label

The Robust RFID-Label from Schreiner MediPharm has now been successful for five years and is therefore celebrating a somewhat special anniversary. Sebastian Münscher, Product Manager RFID/NFC Solutions, talks about the special features of this unique solution and new market findings.

Why is the Robust RFID-Label from Schreiner MediPharm a success story?

As early as during the development of the label with its special structure to protect the sensitive RFID chip we focused on the particular challenges of the pharmaceutical industry. The label must be very flexible to enable its application to containers with narrow radii such as vials or syringes. At the same time, the integrated RFID chip must resist even high mechanical stress during pharmaceutical production processes to ensure reliable performance until final use.

What specific feedback are you receiving from the market?

We’re seeing that during automatic processing our Robust RFID-Label offers decisive benefits compared to conventional RFID labels and that it has the potential to change the market. Without a special protective structure, a certain percentage of RFID chips break on the high-speed labeling machines typically used in pharmaceutical production settings. That leads to failures and sales losses that are particularly serious the higher the price of a drug is and the larger the required volumes are. In addition to the positive customer feedback, we’re obviously delighted that our Robust RFID-Label in 2022 was recognized with the prestigious FINAT Award in the Innovation category and the principal award in the overall group of Innovation & Electronic Printing.

How do you see the development, moving forward?

Thanks to increasing digitalization and automation in the healthcare sector it’s going to be particularly important to offer reliable RFID solutions with process stability for marking drugs and consumables. Ultimately, RFID is the technology of the future that can be used to automatically read and analyze large volumes of reliable data and is therefore the key to digitalization. Here we’re seeing major potential for our Robust RFID-Label.
